It’s not just about single words anymore – you’re here to show off your phrase-building skills and idiom prowess. Are you ready? Of course, you are! Let’s dive in!

Just a word? Pfff, make it a phrase!

You know how Wordle games have been a hot thing lately. The original five-letter, six-attempt word-guessing concept has spawned a gazillion of spin-offs and homages, and Phrazle is probably the most mind-bending of them all. Compared to it, your old one-letter-at-a-time guessing routine seems like a walk in the park. This game packs a punch, and it’s all about uncovering word patterns and phrases that seem so obvious when you finally nail them, but can tie your brain into one big knot while you’re trying to crack them.

How to play Phrazle

  • Guess the phrase and type in the right answer in six attempts
  • Each phrase you come up with has to include valid words and use all the spaces
  • With every phrase, the colors of the boxes will change telling you how close you are to the solution.

Now, a little bit more details. Once you launch the game, you’ll see six rows of boxes, representing a phrase in question. There is no knowing how many words it’ll consist of, or even how many letters are there going to be in each word. None of that easy-peasy five-letter stuff! Phrazle is as random as it gets, and the phrase you need to put together can be just about anything, from a dictionary-grade idiom only spotted in the fanciest of books to one of those you use every day. The number of words in the phrase and the number of letters in every word – that’s all you start with.

Six rows of boxes represent six attempts you have to crack the code. How on earth can you do that in just six attempts? Don’t sweat it! With the right strategy, it’s all possible. But you need to start with something, right? Just type any phrase off the top of your head! And by ‘any’ goes any at all. No obligatory grammar restrictions, no requirements as to the meaning. Just type in any words that contain the needed number of letters. The words must be valid, the phrase must not.

Color clues – What do they mean?

As usual, you’ll get those sweet color clues to guide you in the right direction. They’re just like in Wordle, but there are now more of them:

  • Green – great job, the right letter in the right spot!
  • Yellow – you’re on to something, the right letter in the wrong place.
  • Violet – cold, but not ice-cold, the letter is in the phrase, but in another word.
  • Gray – sorry, man, no such letter here.

Pay close attention to those clues – they’re basically the only thing that can show you the way through this letter jumble! By placing the letters based on these colors in your subsequent guesses, you can achieve much more than just by blind guessing. And even gray letters are a relief, cause you don’t even have to ponder on where to put them anymore – you can just forget about them altogether! With that in mind, let’s move on to the actual winning strategies and tricks.

Tips and tricks for playing Phrazle

Basically, the whole strategy can be summed up by one single advice – play Phrazle just as you would play Wordle, but on a grander scale. Now, what exactly does it mean? Read these tips and keep them in mind when you make your debut!

  1. Phrases are mostly idioms

To be even guessable, phrases must be recognizable, right? That’s why you can safely expect the phrase in questions to be some kind of an idiom, or at least an everyday phrase you hear on a regular basis. Most likely, you know it and use it. If not, you can still guess – and expand your vocabulary at the same time.

  1. Start with words that include most common letters

There are vowels that are more common than others, and the same goes for consonants. When coming up with your starting phrase, try to include as many of them as possible. This is actually easier to do in Phrazle, cause you’ve got not just one word, but several to spread them across.

  1. The shortest words are for articles, prepositions and pronouns

When you see a word that has just two or three boxes, you can instantly go with words like ‘the’, ‘on’, ‘by’, ‘my’ there. Not only does it provide a rather high chance of guessing right off the bat, but also narrows down the range of phrases to choose from  – cause, obviously, there are just so many phrases that have, for instance, ‘under the’ at the beginning.

  1. Don’t get stuck on grammar and meaning

We kind of talked about it already, but it’s worth another mention. When you type in your guesses, you shouldn’t focus on making your phrase sound all nice and wise. It doesn’t have to make sense – it has to make letters.

  1. Shuffle and juggle those letters as you need

That said, pick words that would have exactly the letters you wanna check. Let’s say, you’ve nailed a few vowels, but they are yellow. And you also have one violet consonant. Your next guess? Come up with words where those yellow vowels are arranged differently, and make sure to include that consonant in some other word in the phrase as well.

Hopefully, these pieces of Phrazle wisdom will come in handy when coping with particularly tricky phrases! Maybe, you’ll discover some other tricks of your own – feel free to share them on our site!
